Second Language

After reading Chapter 12 I noted how much I enjoyed the section about the benefits of learning a second language. I always regretted not learning a second language beyond my courses in high school. My girlfriend pursued a second language after high school through college in Spanish. She picked up a second major in Spanish to continue practicing the language and was even able to spend a month studying abroad in Panama. Learning a second language has been extremely useful for her in many aspects of her life especially in the workforce. Knowing the culture and language of another ethnicity has made it easier for her to understand why people do the things they do and how they function. She used to work a job in retail in a heavily populated Hispanic area and was able to easily assist customers. I always wished that I had been taught a second language from a young age because I know it is much easier to learn as a child. I currently work in the Lancaster area and there is also a heavy Spanish population in the clientele. I think for work purposes I would really benefit from the tool of being bilingual.
