I found the concept of emerging adulthood very interesting. I've observed that people are entering adult life later than in previous generations but I didn't have a term for it. I watched several of Professor Jeffrey Arnett's short youtube videos. I realize it's the new normal but I'm not quite as okay with it as Arnett is. I wonder about the long range implications to individuals and society to delay "growing up" by 10 years. Arnett states that everyone experiences the emerging adult stage but for some it is shorter and other longer. Such as only 18-21 or 18-29. I moved out of my parent's home at the age of 27, so in some ways that is when I left emerging adulthood and became an adult. Even though I'm past the emerging adult age range I very much identify with three of the characteristics of emerging adulthood - Focusing on one's own self-development, feeling in-between and remarkable optimism. I think this is mostly because I'm still in school and haven't fully entered my life work. I do know who I am and what I want to do with my life and I'm aiming to reach my highest career goals by the time I'm 50.
