Chapter 6
I found the concept of object permanence very interesting. Object permanence is "the realization that objects or people continue to exist when they are no longer in sight." (Berger 155) What I found so interesting was that this doesn't develop in babies until they are about 8 months old. A common game to play with young infants is peek-a-boo and I wonder if this game was intended to be a stepping stone to learning and grasping object permanence. By showing that even though a face is hiding behind hands and is out of view it returns a few seconds later. My husband and I don't have kids yet, but we do have a dog. When he was a puppy I remember when he finally learned object permanence, it was after many games of hiding the ball behind our backs then showing it to him a few seconds later. Ever since then, if something went out of his sight, he knew it still existed, it just needed to be found.
