The First Two Years Chapter 6
This chapter was very interesting to me because I have had background in psychology, but nothing in depth of the development of infants. Me, being a babysitter of over seven years, I was always interested in the ways baby talk and act. I always would observe them and wonder why they do the things they do; this chapter answered a lot of my questions. I found it interesting that behind everything a baby does is a part of a developmental process. One developmental step that had interested me the most is the "little scientist". I attached to this one the most because I babysit a little boy Ryan and he does exactly what the little scientist stage is all about. Ryan is always going into drawers and picking up objects and examining them. He likes to go around and feel different textures and examine the room full of different objects. The "little scientist" refers to a baby who experiments without anticipating results. Ryan would love to pick up big objects and either throw them on the floor, or throw something at other people and clash things together. I would look at this as him experimenting what the objects are in a form of play. He used to pick up pots and throw them on the floor, not anticipating that it would make a loud noise. There was another time where he picked up a ball-shaped like purse throwing it at someone because he thought of it as something of play; not anticipating that it actually could hurt someone. The "little scientist" made me compare this to my observations with kids and made it interesting to me that this definition is actually what they are doing in their life. They are going out and experimenting different things to see what they do. This chapter was very helpful and informative with some of the questions I have been asking myself for a while.
