Chapter 9 Post 2
Chapter 9 was interesting. Early childhood: cognitive development is the title of the chapter. Language is very important for children and growing up. The book says that if children grow up not speaking the dominant language of their country they are at a disadvantage. However, learning more than one language can come in handy in the future. According to the book, which I found the most interesting, was learning a language is the easiest during childhood. I wish my parents enrolled me in a program to learn Spanish, because I am learning it now and it's difficult, so if I had previously been exposed to it earlier it would be easier for me now. I do not agree with "English only" advocates, I mean I do agree with the fact that you need to learn English to fit in America, because people are very prejudice to other people who can not speak English. There are also many benefits to learning a second language, so when I have kids in the future I will most definitely start teaching them a second language early!

The idea of bilingualism in the United States certainly gives some food for thought. I enjoyed your response. In relation to your response, what do you think of this article. I've pasted the link at the bottom of this comment. It is about whether or not schools should be teaching bilingualism. There are many studies that prove the benefits of learning two languages but the United States is dramatically behind other nations in the area of language acquisition and early language development. I would agree that it is a great idea to teach children two languages. It addition, regardless of your political opinions on immigration in the United States, it is certainly an undeniable fact that population of Latin Americans in the United States is vastly growing and that many of them do not fluently speak English. For this reason it can be considered of the utmost importance for people to be bilingual, particularly in the work force, for example as a doctor, teacher or police officer. The best way to have a bilingual population is to begin with early education. This would benefit both populations and increase community bonds and help avoid many issues. Bilingualism is something that the education system of the United States needs to start putting more resources towards.
