Week 3 post 2

This chapter has taught me a lot about numerous ways about developmental stages through babies to toddlers to adolescent. There were many concepts that I found interesting as I in depth read through the chapters and separate articles about the developmental stages. However, the stage gap between the second and formal stage really shows the advance meant in the brain. It goes from a couple words to being able to understand and comprehend nouns and verbs. This interests me most because instead of learning one or two words the child is completely working on figuring out the actually concepts of the language after observing and learning in the earlier developmental stages. After learning this, I am excited to have my own kids and be able to watch this developmental advances. I hope we can learn more things about how to help advance the child's' development more so that I can incorporate it with my own family in the future as well as my future career; which is working with special needs and patients with brain trauma. Therefore, I am also hoping that we learn more about brain development issues or things that can go wrong in the developmental stages to also help aid me.

  1. Yes, this was definitely an interesting chapter. It is amazing how fast babies learn. Considering your interest in working with individuals with special needs and brain trauma, I think you will find the work that the Family Hope Center is doing interesting. http://www.familyhopecenter.com/
Also a 14 year old girl in my church suffered serious brain injury in a car accident earlier this year. In the first weeks, she made no response, her eyes did not focus and it was as if she was not there. for months after she "woke" up she couldn't talk, but would use pictures and an alphabet chart to communicate what she wanted. her hand coordination was affected, so even though she could still spell, her writing was illegible. It was a very happy day for her and everyone else when she said her first words. As her speech continues to improve it is interesting to observe her simplified language. her speech development is somewhat different from an infants and in other ways similar. In some ways she communicates like a teenager and in other ways like a young child.
